Osborne’s rain worry for Toast

Jamie Spencer celebrates on Toast of New York after winning the UAE Derby.

Trainer Jamie Osborne has offered a note of caution about Toast Of New York’s participation in the Investec Derby, should the wet weather continue.

The Michael Buckley-trained colt has been on target for the Epsom Classic on June 7 ever since scooping a huge prize when winning the UAE Derby back at the end of March.

“He’s in good form and has been doing everything we ask of him well,” said Osborne.

“One of my doubts would be him getting the trip, and if it is raining like this at Epsom and keeps doing so he won’t run.

“In a way we’re working back from next year’s Dubai World Cup and I wouldn’t want to risk him by running in a soft-ground Derby.

“He has won a Group Two and I would like him to win a Group One as a three-year-old. The obvious race to do that would be in Chicago in August for the Secretariat Stakes.

“I wouldn’t be against going to the Breeders’ Cup, which would be a nice preparation for Meydan.”
