Michael Katsidis is on the comeback trail, and wants to step up his level of competition

Since emerging from retirement this year, former WBO interim lightweight belt holder Michael Katsidis (30-6, 24 KOs) has won two fights, and is eyeing, among other fights, a rematch with Juan Diaz. Now 33-years old, Katsidis’ last two fights have occurred at light welterweight, and he has earned victories against Eddy Comaro (27-21-5, 11 KOs) and Graham Earl (26-5, 12 KOs), who hadn’t fought since 2009 before coming out of retirement to rematch with Katsidis.

Juan Diaz (39-4, 19 KOs), Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs), and England’s Derry Mathews (35-9-2, 19 KOs) are the list of opponents that Katsidis would like to step up against.

“All three of these fights are an interest to us,” said Brendon Smith, Katsidis’ manager and trainer. “I have had positive discussions with the Diaz and Mathews camps. Michael has always had a burning desire for a rematch with Juan Diaz. We felt Michael won the first fight and feel that the rematch would be another great fight.”

Brendon Smith, Michael Katsidis and judge Glen Hamada might be the only three people who thought that Katsidis won the 2008 show down with Juan Diaz. The fight, which pitted two all-action fighters against one another, underwhelmed, as Katsidis fought tentatively and was soundly out-boxed by Diaz. Diaz has won four fights since coming out of retirement last year.

Katsidis hasn’t fought outside of Australia since 2012, when he dropped a majority decision to Albert Mensah (27-5-1, 12 KOs) in Las Vegas. Though he was rocked a few times by Mensah, over the course of those 10 rounds, Katsidis threw 1,148 punches.
